Strategic Plan 2004-2008 [as Word Document]
NKONG HILL
- TOP COMMON INITIATIVE GROUP (NCIG) was formed by 6 promoters
in 1996, against the background of a very severe economic recession
in Cameroon. The main promoter was Mr Folefac Vincent Anu. Of
these promoters four were women. Many people in the community
were out of work , the currency had been devalued, banks were
collapsing and there was general lack of liquidity. This situation
led many to borrowing from moneylenders at rates as high as 30%
compound rate. Many were unable to pay and remained shackled to
the moneylenders. The promoters were moved to action by the case
of a widow who had borrowed 10000FCFA (about 14 USD) and in six
months was being asked to pay 54000FCFA (90 USD) which she didn't
have. The promoters then decided to start a weekly savings club.
As membership grew and more and more people were rescued from
the loan sharks through the micro credit scheme that was run as
part of the savings club, the members decided to register the
organisation as a community based self help organisation with
a broader mission.
It has grown
over the years and even begun several outreach programmes to various
rural communities.
